We are beings of both body and spirit. All of my experiences in energy work and psychic phenomenon have led me to believe this with as much conviction as I believe the sun will rise tomorrow on the shoulders of the eastern horizon.Although disputed by our current materialist culture, the existence of the energy body is hardly a new or even revolutionary concept. It is a conviction shared by many traditions around the world, both in modern times and in cultures that stretch far into the mists of the past. The vital energy that flows through us resides at the heart of disciplines in the martial arts. It is fundamental to yoga, Feng Shui, Tai Chi, and a dozen different healing systems. And a knowledge of this energy - how it moves through us, as well as how it moves us - is integral to our overall health and well-being.
A significant part of understanding how vital energy impacts our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness involves coming to understand how that energy moves within us, through us, and around us. The currents of vital energy flow throughout our world like currents in the ocean. We move through them and are, in turn, moved by them. Every living thing contributes to that endless tide just as every living thing relies upon it. It is part of the webwork of the world in which we live -- an endlessly reciprocal cycle of breath and light.
Several New Age systems posit that we are light-beings, that this energy does not simply support us. It is us -- a truth we experience on so profound a level that it becomes difficult to shape into words. I do not dispute this notion that we are light-beings (or star-stuff or whatever similar descriptors we may cobble together in our fumbling attempts to express that intrinsically immortal essence which chooses to enrobe itself in flesh). But I suggest that this subtle or light body is nevertheless still a body. Although comprised of that more-than-physical substance so inadequately called "energy," that body still possesses intrinsic form and structure. And that structure is broadly consistent, adhering to certain rules. It is a structure that we can perceive through a variety of methods, so that it can be quantified, recorded, and understood.
